(HealthDay News) — Naloxone, also known as Narcan or Evzio, is a medication that treats opioid overdose.

Naloxone can restore normal respiration for people who have stopped breathing, says the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Naloxone can be:

  1. Injected, or used as a nasal spray.

  2. Given by friends and family members, depending on the state.

  3. Varied in dosage. Always read the package carefully before using it.

  4. Bought at many pharmacies where states permit its sale.

If someone you know is overdosing, call 911 immediately.
